Fundraiser at Brewery Bay... february 22, 2016
M4R was able to add more funds to the amount already collected with this fundraiser, which was held February, 22 at Brewery Bay Food Company. Patrons purchased $50 tickets for a four-course dinner. There were two sittings — one at 5:30 p.m. and the second at 7:30 p.m. There was a silent auction as well, which three Lakehead students took on. Thank you so much to all who attended and assisted with this wonderful evening.
At the fundraiser, Mainprize and co-chair Gill Tillmann made short presentations to let the crowd know how the money will be used, what M4R is currently doing and what it is planning for the future. The sub-committees are looking after clothing, furniture, health and education. Clothing donations will be accepted once the specific needs of the family become known.
Daphne Mainprize, co-chair of M4R shared with those attending that a four-bedroom house is ready to welcome a family. The money collected will be spent towards rent with the remaining going towards airfare, English language and work-related training, utilities, food, health care, etc.
“It’s going on track with what we’ve anticipated from the beginning,” Mainprize said of the progress M4R has made since its formation in last summer. “We’re ready for them to come. We’re in the loop for all the processes of getting them here, so it’s a waiting game now. We’re in the waiting mode for the family.”

A childs christmas in wales ~ with ALEX
Sunday, December 13, 2015
Nothing evokes the spirit of Christmas quite like “A Child’s Christmas in Wales,” the beloved story by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
With that in mind, the folk band ALEX made the story the centerpiece of its 2015 Christmas season concert, and the Orillia Museum of Art and History hosted. A dramatic reading of the story by Don Evans, an emeritus member of the band, was interspersed with a dozen or more Christmas carols and traditional instrumentals... everything from “Christmas Time’s A-Coming” and “In the Bleak Midwinter” to “Silent Night.” The audience sang along to favourites.
Fantastic turn out of support for Mariposans for Refugees M4R/ St. Paul's- Project Syria at this afternoon's concert with storyteller Don Evans and local folk band Alex. Almost $1500.00 was raised.
Orillia performing arts forum & Mariposians for refugees (M4R)
On Tuesday, November 3, 2015 600 people from the Orillia community and surrounding area had the great pleasure to attend a concert produced by the Orillia Performing Arts Forum (OPAF) in conjunction with Mariposans for Refugees. The concert was held to a full house, with over 200 musicians performing.
We are still waiting for figures to come in, but are most likely well over half way to our $30K goal to sponsor one family.
“It was an enormous artistic and an enormous financial success. I’m still sort of reeling by this. It was emotional to see. I’ve never seen anything like this and I’ve lived here for 25 years.” ~Roy Menagh, Musical Director
